Fashion Icon makes Motu History : A Revelation from Virgil Abloh

A REVELATION FROM VIRGIL ABLOH

The Masters of the Universe x Virgil Abloh collection truly symbolizes toys as art and art inspired by toys.

Mattel’s collector platform, Mattel Creations, has unveiled its latest Masters of the Universe toy set with the late Virgil Abloh.

From Off-White™ to Louis Vuitton, Abloh was known for embracing his inner child – serving as a central theme in several runway shows, collections and campaigns. As such, it’s fitting that the late creative would merge his creativity with Mattel’s rich toy history.

Featured in the drop are four monochromatic natural-colored figures in shades of brown, beige and peanut butter. When Abloh first started the collection, he had access to the entire MOTU world to cultivate the collection’s design. Since the designer passed during its creation, the collection was completed by his creative team at Alaska Alaska.

“Virgil had a deep interest in the MOTU property, in which aspects of his interest were rooted in nostalgia. The selection of characters for this offering we believe to be rooted in their iconography and significance within the franchise,” said the London-based design agency, Alaska Alaska. “The design direction looked to preserve the existing iconography, using color theory as a point of entry into novelty, and collector’s culture, drawing a parallel between art collectors and comic book collectors.”

The Masters of the Universe x Virgil Abloh figures are set to release online on Friday, October 21.
